After a death often referred to as post-death or after-death arrangements, includes a range of tasks and responsibilities that need to be addressed following the passing of an individual.

After a person dies in BC, important things to do include notifying the authorities, making funeral plans, dealing with their will and estate, and taking care of any legal matters.

Find Guidance

  • Learn what happens when a person dies in BC and the steps to be taken to resolve any issues. Things to consider might be cancelling a passport, driver’s license, and/or BC Services card, transferring car registration and insurance, cancelling bank accounts and credit cards, and discontinuing online accounts and social media. from the Government of BC.
  • Explore how to register for a death certificate, it is recommended you get at least 4 original copies, as outlined by the Government of BC.
  • Seek support and guidance from the executor of the deceased person’s will.
  • Talk to family and friends who have supported the after death work of a person.
  • Contact a funeral home of get guidance from the BC Funeral Association.

  • Explore ways to cope with grief and bereavement personally and to support others through the process from ementalhealth.ca.
  • Know that you are entitled to a 3-day bereavement unpaid leave for the death of an immediate family member Government of BC.
  • Consider contacting the trained volunteers at BC Bereavement Helpline – Toll free at 1-877-779-2223 or email them with your concerns.
  • It can be an emotional and devastating time; consider connecting with counsellors who specialize in death and dying and bereavement support through Counselling BC.
  • Learn how other families and family caregivers are coping with the grief and loss of a loved one through Family-Caregivers of BC.
  • Check if your workplace offers Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) free counselling services to employees and their families, including grief and bereavement support.
  • Call 8-1-1 for information and resources on bereavement support, mental health services, and counselling options available in BC.
