Emotional health includes a person’s emotions, thoughts, feelings, and the ability to solve problems and socialize with others.

  • Research shows that emotional wellness and stability can improve your physical health.
  • Challenges of emotional health in seniors can include feelings of loneliness, isolation, depression, anxiety, mood, and sleep changes. Seniors who are caregivers for their senior partners also experience many emotional stressors.
  • Learn how to reduce feelings of   loneliness, isolation and depression from Healthlink BC.
  • Explore how to share your feelings and needs with others and seek opportunities for socializing, exercising, and doing activities you enjoy. Check out the BC Seniors Service Directory for helpful suggestions.
  • For help, you can contact the Seniors Distress Line in British Columbia at 604-872-1234 – it is open 24/7 and offers support in up to 140 languages to talk to trained volunteers about retirement, stress, relocation, loss of a loved one, isolation, physical or mental health issues, and emotional support.
  • Choose a professional to help you with your emotional health. Most offer a 15-minute consult for free. You can read their biographies on Counselling BC to choose a clinical counsellor, psychologist, art therapist, or psychotherapist who can help.
  • Thinking about death or suicide is a serious symptom of depression or extreme anxiety. If you or someone you care about talks about feeling helpless or is showing warning signs of suicide, find help right away. Call the BC Crisis Line at 1-800-SUICIDE (1-800-784-2433) or call 911.
