Assisted living residences offer personal care services to those who can live independently but may require some help with daily activities.
Tips & Links
- Check Healthlink BC for a list of what should be included in assisted living residences, also called retirement homes or supportive housing.
- Based on your home care assessment, you can be eligible for assisted living services, if you can make decisions on your own behalf, are at risk remaining in your current living environment; and have agreed to pay the assessed client rate and any additional optional charges for services.
- Also, you can be eligible for a short-term stay in assisted living if you have recently been discharged from an acute care hospital, require care to prevent or reduce the need for hospital or emergency department services or admission to a long-term care home, or have a life-limiting illness requiring respite care.
- Discuss your living situation wishes with your family and care partners using the activities in My Place to Call Home. Then make a list of assisted living residences in your community that meet your “wishes and wants”.
- Contact the residences directly to learn about wait lists, services offered, and costs. If you are interested, most facilities recommend getting on a waiting list.
- Learn about the costs for assisted living. Generally in BC, the costs depending on the services offered and your subsidies, can range from $3000 -12,000 per month.
- Learn how to access subsidized assisted living through BC Housing or your local health authority, which assesses eligibility based on your income and care support needed.
