Each B.C. resident enrolled with the medical services plan (MSP), is given a unique lifetime identifier for health care called a personal/provincial health number (PHN).

The Personal Health Number (PHN) provides access to insured provincial health care benefits for eligible residents of British Columbia. To receive services, you must present your PHN on proper identification before accessing any government health care services in the province.

- Your personal/provincial health number (PHN) is printed on your BC Driver’s license or your BC Services Card. You should always carry your card, to present whenever you need health care services.
- Learn more about your personal/ provincial health number (PHN) from the Government of BC.
- Understand that your PHN is not transferrable or to be used by anyone else. Protect your card and number from fraud.
- Know that the BC Services Card has replaced the CareCard, including the Gold CareCard.
Things You Can Do
- Learn how to get a BC Services Card for identification if you do not have a driver’s licence.
- Set up your BC Service Card online, in person, and on a mobile app from the Government of BC. You need 2 pieces of government-issued identification such as a BC driver’s license, permanent resident card, work permit, student permit, or temporary resident permit. One ID must include a photo.
- Know you can set up your BC Services card in person at a BC driver licensing office by booking an appointment in advance.
