Diagnostic ultrasound, also called sonography, uses sound waves to produce images of structures in your body.

Tips & Links

  • Ultrasound (U/S) is used to look at your abdomen and pelvic organs, muscles, tendons, heart, and blood vessels to find an injury, tumors, or changes in the size of an organ.
  • The sound waves bounce off the organs or tissues and form a picture in the computer.
  • The test is completed by specially trained health care professional or technician.
  • Know there is usually no preparation and it can be completed in an office, clinic, hospital, or lab setting.
  • Ensure you have your physician, nurse practitioner, or specialist explain the purpose and meaning of your ultrasound results to you.
  • You may be able to see your U/S results in your Health Gateway BC account (accessed with your BC Services Card).
  • Learn how to access Health Gateway BC and other services through the BC Services Card App.
